A consultant needed to develop a technique for better assessing the presence of Sheet versus Channel sands in the Gulf of Mexico. The consultant was restricted to publicly available logs and interpretation. In this case the consultant had 15 logs with interpretation and 2 that were not interpreted for the facies type. The consultant wanted to apply knowledge learned from the fifteen interpreted logs to the two un-interpreted.
Spotfire Solution: The consultant used Spotfire Analyst to analyze the interpreted logs. Using clustering techniques the consultant was able to identify the key characteristics or signature of a ‘Sheet’ sand. This was applied to the logs of the other wells to predict facies type. The consultant was able to provide a quick facies prediction with high confidence by using known data. Independent confirmation resulted in a high degree of accuracy. This knowledge has been captured and can be quickly applied to new emerging datasets.
